Lafayette assistant field hockey coach Amy Tran received Goalkeeper of the Tournament accolades at the Women's National Championship in Virginia Beach, Va. It is the fifth time Tran has been named the Goalkeeper of the Tournament during her international career. She was selected to the 2008 USA Field Hockey team to compete in the summer Olympics in Beijing. Tran is a member of the first USA field hockey team to make an appearance in the Olympic Games since 1996.
Tran had great success in the Women's National Championship game on June 21 with a 3-0 shutout win over Midwest. Shortly after, she was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
The 2002 University of North Carolina graduate also received Goalkeeper of the Tournament honors following the Champions Challenge and the Argentina Four Nations Tournament in 2007. At the Pan American Games in 2006, Tran was named to the Pan American Elite Team after recording two shutouts over Cuba and Canada en route to USA earning the silver medal. She was also named to the USA National Squad from 2003-2008.
Prior to Beijing, the National Team will participate in a four-nation tournament in Bremen, Germany, competing against Korea, India, and Germany from July 4-6. The team will then compete in a three-game series against the Netherlands, ranked number one in the world, on July 9-12.
The USA National Team opens Olympic Games competition on Sunday, August 10 against Argentina. The United States is slotted in Pool B with Argentina, Germany, Great Britain, Japan and New Zealand.
Since arriving on College Hill with four years of collegiate experience and 12 years of international experience, Tran has become a valuable asset to Lafayette. Acknowledged as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, she will continue her position as assistant field hockey coach this fall.
